Which lighting to choose for the living room?
The living room is a space where we spend a lot of time – from relaxing and watching television to socializing with family and friends. For this reason, lighting in this room should be warm, pleasant, and adaptable to different situations.
The most common choice is warm LED lighting, specifically a light temperature between 2700 and 3000 Kelvin. This type of light emits a gentle yellowish hue and creates a relaxed atmosphere, making it ideal for evening downtime and socializing.
Interior design experts often recommend combining multiple light sources instead of relying on a single ceiling light. An ideal combination includes a central ceiling light for basic ambient illumination, a floor lamp for extra atmosphere or reading, wall lamps or LED strips for decorative accenting, and a table lamp for additional lighting.
Regarding light output, a living room typically requires between 1500 and 3000 lumens, depending on the size of the room. The standard recommendation is about 100 to 150 lumens per square meter.
In addition to color temperature, brightness control plays a crucial role. Dimmable LED bulbs allow you to adjust the lighting intensity for different occasions – brighter light works well for hosting or cleaning, while dimmer light sets a cozy mood for evening relaxation.
Paying attention to the placement of light sources is equally important. For instance, a floor lamp next to the sofa is great for reading, whereas LED strips behind the TV or shelving units add a modern decorative touch that highlights your room's design.
Lamp shade color and material are other essential details. Light, semi-transparent fabrics allow more light to pass through, keeping the room bright, while darker lampshades produce a softer, more intimate glow.
Ultimately, good living room lighting should be both functional and an integral part of your overall interior design. Well-chosen light fixtures serve as decorative elements that enhance the room's style – whether modern, minimalist, or classic.
LED vs. Traditional Bulb – What Is the Difference?
Lighting technology has developed significantly in recent years, and LED bulbs have become the most popular choice today.
Traditional incandescent bulbs operate on the principle of heating a thin tungsten wire inside a glass bulb. When an electric current passes through this wire, it heats up and begins to glow. However, a large portion of the energy is converted into heat in the process, meaning the efficiency of these bulbs is relatively low.
LED bulbs function differently – light is produced by passing current through a semiconductor diode (Light Emitting Diode). Thanks to this technology, LED lighting consumes 70 to 90 percent less energy than traditional bulbs, produces far less heat, and has a significantly longer lifespan.
While a traditional bulb usually lasts about 1,000 hours, an LED bulb can operate from 15,000 up to 50,000 hours.
Another important advantage of LED lighting is its versatility in color temperature. LED bulbs can produce light in various tones – from warm yellow reminiscent of traditional bulbs to cool white light suitable for workspaces, offices, and industrial facilities. Because of this, they easily adapt to different needs and environments.
LED technology is also more resistant to frequent switching on and off. While traditional bulbs burn out faster when turned on and off repeatedly, LED bulbs maintain their lifespan without a significant reduction in longevity. This makes them an ideal choice for areas like hallways, bathrooms, or outdoor motion-sensor lighting.
Thanks to all these benefits – lower energy consumption, long lifespan, and better eco-friendliness – LED lighting represents the standard in modern households, commercial spaces, and public lighting today.

Lumens and Watts – What's the Difference?
When buying lighting, we often encounter two labels: watts (W) and lumens (lm).
Watts indicate electrical energy consumption, i.e., how much electricity a light bulb uses.
Lumens, on the other hand, show how much light a bulb produces.
In other words, lumens determine how bright the light is, while watts show how much energy is needed to produce that light.
With LED lighting, a small number of watts can yield a high number of lumens, which is why this technology is much more efficient.
Because of this, more attention is paid today to the number of lumens than to the number of watts when purchasing bulbs. While light bulbs were once selected based on their power expressed in watts, with modern LED lighting, lumens are a much more reliable indicator of light brightness.
For example, an LED bulb that consumes around 8 to 10 watts can produce approximately 800 lumens of light, which corresponds to the brightness of a traditional 60-watt bulb. Similarly, an LED bulb of around 12 to 15 watts can produce more than 1,200 lumens, which is enough to well illuminate larger rooms.
When choosing lighting, it is recommended to first consider how much light is needed in the space, i.e., the number of lumens, and then the energy consumption expressed in watts. That way, it is possible to find lighting that will provide enough light while simultaneously reducing electricity consumption.
How to Properly Arrange Lighting in a Room?
Good lighting layout can completely change the look of a space. Interior designers often use so-called layered lighting, which is a combination of several types of light.
The first layer is general lighting, which evenly illuminates the entire room. These are most often ceiling lights or recessed LED spotlights.
The second layer is ambient lighting, which creates warmth and atmosphere. This includes floor lamps, wall lights, or LED strips behind the TV and shelves.
The third layer is task lighting, which illuminates specific zones such as a desk, kitchen countertop, or bathroom mirror.
The combination of these light sources makes the space more functional and visually pleasing.
Properly arranged lighting does not only affect the appearance of the space, but also the feeling of comfort and functionality. When only one light source is used, the space often looks flat and without depth. Layered lighting, on the other hand, allows the space to be illuminated from multiple angles, achieving a more pleasant and natural atmosphere.
Interior designers often emphasize that every room should have a combination of multiple light sources. For example, in a living room, ceiling light can serve as basic lighting, while floor lamps and wall lights create a warmer ambiance during the evening. That way, the space can be adapted to different activities, from reading and working to relaxing.
In modern interiors, indirect lighting is also increasingly used. These are LED strips or hidden lights placed behind drop ceilings, furniture, or shelves. This kind of lighting does not shine directly into the eyes, but subtly illuminates the space and creates a pleasant visual effect.
Another advantage of layered lighting is the ability to adjust the light intensity. With the help of dimmers or smart lighting systems, it is easy to change the light brightness depending on the time of day or mood. Thus, the same space can be brightly lit during work and later transformed into a peaceful and relaxing ambiance.
Thanks to the development of LED technology, today it is much easier to combine different types of lighting. LED lights come in various shapes, color temperatures, and brightness levels, so they can adapt to almost any space and decor style.
That is precisely why layered lighting is becoming an increasingly popular approach in modern interior design, giving a better effect than a single bright ceiling lamp.
At What Height Should a Pendant Light Be Installed?
Proper height for a pendant light is important for both aesthetics and functionality. Above a dining table, the light is most commonly placed 60 to 80 centimeters above the table surface. This illuminates the table well without obstructing the line of sight between people sitting at the table.
Above a kitchen island, the recommended height is 70 to 90 centimeters above the countertop. If multiple lights are used, the spacing between them is usually 60 to 80 centimeters.
In hallways or walkway areas, the bottom part of the lamp should be at least 210 to 220 centimeters from the floor.
Proper lamp height helps direct light exactly where it is needed. If the lamp is installed too high, the light can scatter throughout the room and lose some of its intensity. On the other hand, if it is placed too low, it can interfere with movement or block the view.
For dining tables, a single central lamp or several smaller pendant lights arranged in a line are often used. It is important that the light evenly illuminates the entire table surface, especially if it is frequently used for eating, working, or socializing with family and friends.
In kitchens with an island, installing two or three pendant lights above the countertop is popular. In addition to providing extra light for food preparation, these lamps also serve a decorative role and often represent a central design element of the kitchen.
When choosing the height of a lamp, you should also take into account the size of the room, ceiling height, and the shape of the lamp itself. Larger and bulkier lamps are usually installed somewhat higher so the space does not feel cluttered, while smaller lamps can be lowered to create a warmer and more intimate atmosphere.
In modern interiors, lights with adjustable heights are often used, making it easy to adapt the lighting to different needs and situations in the room.
